My courses that you can join

IBDP History

A rigorous, university-level 2-year history course based on lectures and group discussion sessions and offered completely free of charge as a public service. Meant for students in the last 2 academic years before university. You must be enrolled in an IB school to actually sit the exams for academic credit, but you can also just take the course for academic enrichment, intellectual curiosity, and/or skill development.

IBDP Economics

Finding standard economics textbooks unspeakably boring and unengaging, I am developing a case-study based IBDP Economics course, but do not anticipate offering until the academic year starting in September 2024 to first test out History in this "world classroom" format.

Academic Tutoring

My focus is on my public service classroom teaching and my own study lifelong, but I do entertain selected tutoring assignments as a practical challenge that subsidizes my one expensive taste: my vast libraries. I have tutored students individually for countless hours, have prepared dozens of students for standardized tests, and strangely happen to consider the SAT a very fun and fulfilling personal hobby.

What my former scholars have to say

(clearly in their own words)

Mr. Leon is without a doubt the most demanding, thoughtful, wacky, knowledgeable, and engaging teacher I have ever had. This course will be challenging, but you will come away a strong writer and critical thinker with a mind of your own. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn valuable history from a skilled and passionate educator. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

P.U., Brown University

It's challenging to find a learning environment where earnest academic endeavors are consistently pursued and encouraged. I had the privilege to join such a classroom led by this intelligent and exemplary educator. His knowledge, resources, and wisdom constantly challenged me to critically view the world and form my own judgment.

K.U., Minerva University

Mr. Leon is not just a teacher, but he is an enthusiastic scholar believing in the power of teaching. Any minute of learning with Mr. Leon is worth it and will change your life.

Listen to anything he says well, you will end up as a different person with different perspectives.

A.D., McGill University

Prepare to read, interpret, analyze, discuss, get roasted, and finally understand. It’s not just memorizing, although it is still important.

Mr. Leon hath pushed me, and given me such overwhelming amount of readings, told ruthless jokes, butchered terrible essays, been unbelievably enthusiastic about all kinds of topic; and what's his reason? I am a student willing to learn.

Y.Z., UWC-USA,

future art student

Mr. Leon has a very specifically rigorous form of teaching which is punishing but also really fun. He truly tries to innovate the classroom be it through games or funny hats. However, you always leave having internalized the knowledge passed to you in class ready to put pen to paper.

R.Z., The University of Oklahoma

Throughout the course, I was encouraged to think critically about the applications of economics concepts- much beyond what the IB calls for. The classes are primarily interactive and even involve custom games (spreadsheet simulations). The requirements to stay current and do well in the class are difficult but the returns trump the investment.

N.G., Cornell University

I had the privilege of being part of Mr. Leon's Economics class, and I can confidently say that there is no teacher as demanding, passionate, and experienced as him. In every class, Mr. Leon demonstrated how knowledgeable he was on the subject, bringing up different case studies from around the world as well as his own personal experiences. With simulations, games, and dances, he made the class interactive and fun, while we also had to take notes, read articles and write essays several times a week. I have never felt more prepared for an exam in my life, while also appreciating the academic environment that encouraged everyone to think critically and develop their own opinions. Although keeping up with the class demands a great deal of effort, I cannot recommend this course highly enough. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take advantage of.

T.Q., University of Chicago

Mr. Leon's teaching will be etched in your memory just as much as the nicknames he calls you on your graded exam; I have never encountered such detailed and straightforward comments in any other class. Mr. Leon truly strives to educate you, partly for his own amusement and just slightly out of concern for you. Prior to joining his class, my TikTok screentime averaged 5 hours per week. After I joined, my TikTok screen time dropped to zero, only to revert back to 5 hours once the class ended. Take it as both evidence of the rigor of the class and the entertainment that it provided.

Y.W., UWC-USA

I remember the first day of school when I walked into Mr. Leon's office and was inspired by the passion with which he talked about his history course, becoming impressed with the seriousness with which he takes education, all the while gazing at his desk which was covered by a blanket of rubber ducks. Mr. Leon is a phenomenal educator, not only able to impart knowledge with unrivalled efficiency, but also able to instill joy into learning. I am very thankful for the way Mr. Leon has prepared me for college, teaching me essential learning skills and critical thinking skills that will help me heavily throughout my life.

J.C., UWC-USA

Being Mr. Leon's student is no easy task, but a very rewarding experience nonetheless. It will definitely require numerous hours dedicated to readings and studying every week, as well as active participation in the class from those expecting to benefit from his unique teaching methods.

In our Economics class, Mr. Leon was able to transform complex economic theory and diagrams into easily understandable concepts through fun and innovative games, making the whole learning experience much more entertaining than a simple lecture-style class.

One aspect that truly stood out to me was that Mr. Leon inspired us to delve deeper into the material, encouraging critical thinking and fostering a genuine understanding of the subject. It was through this approach that I realized I wasn't just learning for the sake of passing exams but rather building a solid foundation of knowledge that I could carry with me throughout my academic and professional journey.

His interactive teaching methods increased my interest in the subject. I no longer viewed economics as an abstract discipline but rather as a fascinating world of interconnected concepts with real world applications. Mr. Leon was always encouraging us to learn more about topics that were not part of the syllabus. I was personally very interested in behavioral economics, and he would send me articles and book recommendations on the topic very frequently, and ask for my opinion on them afterwards.

After 2 years of having been Mr. Leon's student, I feel very grateful for the invaluable knowledge and skills I have acquired. The challenges, the hours of dedication, and the hard work were undeniably demanding, but the rewards were immeasurable. This was the class where I felt I learned the most and where my passion for economics was nurtured.

A.A.K., Erasmus University

Mr. Leon was my IB Economics instructor. He was one of my most influential teachers -- not only the most qualified, but also inspiring and genuinely committed to his students. Even beyond the classroom, he spent countless unpaid hours doing SAT prep, hosting a debate club, preparing extraordinarily detailed lecture slides and study matrices, and writing essay-length feedback on our exams, EEs and IAs. With his wide-ranging worldwide corporate experience, he provides intellectual diversity that is seldom seen in prominent academic institutions, while remaining respectful and open to alternative policy solutions based in research and data. That is a rare and admirable trait to have in an instructor.

Zoom classes means you will never experience Mr. Leon evacuating with his lecture notes and continuing to teach in the snow after a fire alarm went off. However, you will still enjoy his daily economics videos -- ranging from country music to Seinfeld clips to a PSA from the Bank of Jamaica -- and his dedication to fun class activities involving singing, debates, and Squid Game (back when that was a viral phenomenon).

His course has prevented me from 'getting further bamboozled by the irreality and self-absorption of academics who have never had to do a job outside the classroom.' In fact, I use Mr. Leon's course material periodically in my university courses, and frequently pass on his teachings to my friends who have not been as fortunate as I have been to experience a Mr. Leon educational experience firsthand.
